Grinding machines are used when very close tolerances and fine finishes are required or when the material is too hard to be machined using milling machines or lathes. Surface grinders can be used to obtain parts that are very flat, while cylindrical grinders are used to obtain very close diametral tolerances.
Water jet cutting machines utilize a high pressure stream of water and abrasives to cut through a wide variety of materials, including metals and plastics. On certain projects we may utilize a water jet to cut the profile and some through features. There are times where this will be more efficient than milling machines and can help reduce the manufacturing cost.
Laser cutters employ a high powered laser beam to cut through a variety of materials,
including steel, stainless steel, titanium and aluminum. Similar to water jet cutting, laser cutting can be even more efficient with certain types of materials when it comes to machining the profile and through features. The laser has the ability to cut at a higher speed over the water jet, again, reducing the manufacturing cost.
Heat treating is the process of heating metals to either soften or harden the material.Usually materials are in their softest state, the annealed condition, during the machining process. After machining, we can heat treat the machined parts in order to harden them. Heat treating the material can cause it to expand or contract, so for close tolerance dimensions we would utilize grinding machines to machine those features within tolerance. Not all materials can be heat treated, and not all heat treatable materials can be hardened to the same level of hardness. Sandblasters utilize high pressure air to project fine grain abrasives like sand at high speeds to achieve uniform surface finishes. Smaller or larger grains of abrasives as well as different types of abrasives can be used to achieve the desired surface finish and texture. Sandblasting can also be used to remove paint or contaminants from the surface of parts.
Plating is the process of chemically treating the surface of parts in order to protect them from corrosion or to enhance the appearance. Some of the more common surface treatments are Anodizing (clear, black, red, blue or green are available), Passivation, Chromate Conversion, Zinc Plating and Nickel Plating.
Unlike conventional liquid paint, powder coating utilizes a fine powder that is electrostatically charged. The electrostatic charge causes the powder to be attracted to the part. After applying the powder to the part it is placed in an oven where the powder melts and adheres to the surface creating a hard coating. Powder coating can be done in a variety of colors and has an appearance very similar to liquid paint.
